Making Back to School Traditions Last All Year
The temperature has cooled down and the school zone lights are flashing. Scattered leaves have gone golden and the others will soon gracefully do the same. The yellow school bus has reappeared in the neighborhood and the wheels do indeed go ‘round and ‘round. Everything’s crisp.
Back to School Tips
On-the-Go Breakfasts

• Cream cheese on a bagel or whole-grain toast with fruit and milk.
• Fruit smoothies. Use your child’s favorite fruit combinations along with some orange juice, milk or soymilk and yogurt.
• Hard-boiled eggs with fruit or juice, whole-grain bread, milk. (One mom suggests boiling several every few days and marking the shell so the kids can always have them as quick snacks and/or as part of a meal.)
Back to School Health: What you need to know about Immunizations
“Back-to-School and Immunizations” are two concepts that may cause a parent’s stress level to rise.
“Back-to-School” means summer is almost over and rigorous schedules are ahead. “Immunizations” means decisions must be made and cries will probably be heard. I can’t do much for the cries that often come with the shots, but maybe I can help make your decision easier with a little information on the current immunization schedule.
Nonfiction Series Books for Every Interest and Age
If your children have uttered the dreaded words, “I’m bored,” bring them to your nearest local library to feast on all the new nonfiction books that have been published during the last year. Whatever interest your child has, there’s a book to spark the passion.
Series Books Keep Kids Reading All Summer
As summer reading is upon us, one way children can add to their reading list is with series books: the entertaining page-turners that you can zip through in an afternoon or evening. A series can encourage reading because children get hooked and usually want to read the entire collection.
Should Your Child Have Educational Testing?
Worry over a child’s academic performance is one of the many concerns that parents carry with them. There are myriad reasons for a child to struggle in the classroom, ranging from temporary illness to a chronic learning disability.
However, when small concerns turn into big worries, what is a parent to do? Educational testing is one avenue that is used to help identify problems and work toward a solution.

Kids Learn Language Best Through Immersion
Learning a second language is becoming increasingly important to be competitive in today’s workforce, and one of the best ways parents can insure their children learn a foreign language is through language-immersion schools.
Tulsa public schools has two language immersion elementary schools, Eisenhower International School, which has taught immersion in French and Spanish for approximately 20 years, and Zarrow International School, which offers Spanish Immersion.
Once Upon a Time to Literacy and Beyond

Spring is near, fairy folk are about! The oral tradition of nursery rhymes, folk tales, fairy stories and legends offer up the perfect opportunity to share a story with your children. As a librarian, I often encounter the request, “I need some stories to read to my children.”
“Have you considered a fairy tale?” is my first response. Fairy and folktales are quite often overlooked when it comes to reading a good story.
